Got an idea? Need some funds?

One of the possible consequences of the recession, cuts & general pessimism around is that local projects may go by the board. Although the Coalition Government has mentioned more volunteers going out into the community, some in return for benefits, it is difficult to see how new projects will get off the ground. Even without having to pay wages, things cost money.

So, I was really delighted to find out the other day  that there is money out there & it is not difficult to get hold of. Interested? Read on!

The source is the Co-operative Community Fund & as you would expect it is backed by the values & commitment of the Co-op which for decades has been providing its members with dividends, good value & honesty. The Co-operative Community Fund is a grant scheme, which helps local communities throughout the UK. Thousands of clubs, community groups and local charities have benefited with help for swimming, basket ball, brass bands, bee keeping – the sky is the limit! In my area we could really do with a small area of wasteland being cleared & made into a garden.

The scheme is funded by generous members of The Co-operative donating some of their share of profits, which is then given away in the form of small grants. This year The Co-operative Members have donated £1.2 million to local community groups across the country.

To qualify for a grant projects must:

  • Carry out positive work in the community (it does not have to have charitable status to apply)
  • Address a community issue
  • Provide a long-term benefit to the community
  • Support co-operative values and principles
  • Ideally be innovative in its approach

The Co-operative Community Fund operates on a truly local level.  The money each region has to give is the money that members have donated in their area. Projects are allocated by postcode..

Grants vary from a minimum of £100 to a maximum of £2,000.

So, what have you got to lose? If you have a community group with an idea but are stuck for some funding, fill out the application form here! The Cooperative Membership Fund
