Varicose Veins – Facts and Treatment
Varicose veins are not the prerogative of elderly women. They usually occur in adults and although can occur in any vein, are usually found in the legs.
This infographic sets out:
- What they are
- Key facts
- Symptoms of Varicose veins
- Cause of varicose veins
- Recommended treatment options
I had problems with one of these pesky things several years ago. My leg was really aching – that sort of tooth ache pain and I didn’t know where to put it for comfort. The vein in question was behind my knee and although it wasn’t purple and I didn’t have any thread veins it was enlarged.
I went to my doctor who referred me to a specialist. This was in the days when this sort of treatment was more readily available on the NHS. I realise that such an appointment would not be made now sadly. The specialist did a number of tests similar to having your blood pressure taken. My leg had a tourniquet applied and a machine registered the throbbing that came from the veins as pressure was applied.
As it was, my dear little vein was not bad enough for any immediate treatment. I had to go away and return if it got worse. Thankfully it hasn’t and the ache really only comes if I have been on my feet all day.
Having checked the chart, do any of the symptoms ring bells with you? Have you had any treatment for veins? Were you able to get it through your doctor or did you have to go privately?
This is not a sponsored post. I think the infographic does a really good job of explaining the situation of a condition that many people are familiar with.
Great article. I think women now are more in tune with their bodies and don’t just accept that they judge to tolerate the varicose veins, their jowls, wrinkles and deeper lines.
Cosmetic injectables and other treatments are more accepted than ever before.
No issues yet, though if genetic, have no history in my family. I do have a close friend who suffers, and does not like to wear shorter skirts or dresses since she does not like their appearance.
It is probably easier in the cold weather as you can cover them but that is likely to be when they are most painful I imagine
When I was a child nearly all grown women seemed to have varicose veins. I remember they were much discussed. Are we now shyer of mentioning them?
I’m not sure Isobel. Are people having them treated now where as before they just put up with them? Perhaps support tights have helped! 😉
